Do you believe in God? If so, why? I’m someone that doesn’t typically just take things at face value and accept them, I want to know why. If I am going to accept something as being true, I want to be convinced as to why I should believe that. Nowhere is this more important to me than my faith in Jesus Christ. If God is real, and I believe He is, then there must be reasons for belief that go beyond someone simply saying that it is so. I would submit that the reasons for belief in God are not only compelling but overwhelming. So, I would like to share with you six reasons that I believe in God.
1. There is no reasonable explanation for creation aside from a Creator.
The Psalmist says it so wonderfully in Psalm 19:1 “The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” I cannot look at the glory of God’s creation and not see Him as the cause. From the awe-inspiring views from the Hubble Telescope (Visit the Hubble website if you haven’t seen it) to the DNA that makes up everything in creation, God’s creative power is not only undeniable but it leaves me amazed.
2. The second reason I believe in God has to do with the knowledge that I had about Him before I was a Christian.
The Bible says in Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power, and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” In this verse, Paul declares what we all know, that there is a God and every person knows it because God has made us in such a way so we would know it. If you are reading this, you know that there is a God because He has placed that knowledge within you, it is part of who we are as human beings.
I recognize that some people, for a variety of reasons, suppress and all but destroy this knowledge within themselves, however, it remains nevertheless. Don’t think that other people haven’t got the same understanding that you have. One illustration of this fact is that there has never been a culture or tribe of people discovered that, in some way, didn’t believe in some sort of God. We are, by nature, a religious people, God placed that within you so that you would seek Him out. The God who made you loves you and wants a relationship with you.
3. The next reason is that I believe is the testimony of the Bible.
In a later post, I will share why I believe the Bible, and there are many reasons to do so, however, for now, I will say that the Bible is completely credible, you can trust what it says. The Bible tells us about who God is, how much He loves His creation, and how we can have a relationship with Him. Therefore, this is a strong reason for my faith.
4. I believe in God because I have seen what He has done in my life.
I repented for my sin and trusted Jesus Christ as my Savior when I was 30-years-old and at that moment, just as Jesus said in John 3, I was born again. I am a new person and although no one else can know what happened to me at this moment, I cannot deny what happened because I was there. This, in part, accounts for the boldness of the men who were Jesus’ disciples and the change made in them, they knew Jesus, and even under threat of death, they couldn’t deny what happened.
5. God’s Holy Spirit indwells me and has from the moment I received Jesus as my Savior.
This is the empowerment that the first disciples experienced that fueled their boldness for Christ and I, along with every other Christian, have the continual testimony of the Spirit’s presence within me.
6. Finally, I would point to the testimony of other believers.
From the heroes of the Old Testament to the first disciples, and then down through history, lives have been transformed as people came into a relationship with God and I trust what they say. The strength of that trust lies in the fact that I too have experienced it.
Therefore, I believe that there is a God and I would take that a step further and say, this isn’t just any God, but it is the God revealed in the Bible. He is real and is everything that the Bible claims. If you have never repented of your sin to God and asked Jesus to be the Lord of your life I would encourage you to do that right now. You might say to God, “I know that I’m a sinner and I’m sorry. I believe that Jesus is Your Son and that He died for my sin and that He rose from the grave three days later. God, I ask that you forgive me for my sin because of what Jesus did and I want to receive Jesus as my Savior.”
If you believe that, then the Bible says that you have passed from death to life. Your sin is forgiven and you are a new person in Christ. If that is true, I would like to encourage you to email me and we will help you in getting started as a follower of Jesus Christ. Please email at pastorandrew71@gmail.com
